Dark crypt black and white1/31/2024 ![]() Whilst the Young–Helmholz trichomatic theory of colour vision (now explained by the presence of three different colour opsin genes) suggests we can define all our perceived colours as mixtures of red, blue and green (or with our colour printers using complementary colours: cyan, magenta or yellow), there is no agreed ‘definition of eye colour’ and there are challenges in consistency of describing colours across different languages and cultures. And in that darkness, eyes staring back at me. Viewers tried to predict events based on eye colour, “I see a darkness in you. Capturing the attention of the public with eye colour and genealogies was done marvellously by the TV series (and books) of Game of Thrones. Individuals of Asian or African ancestry, most of whom have brown eyes, can still look at other families. Many people can look at the eye colours in their own families and draw their own pedigrees to see how the Mendelian model applies. This Mendelian-Complex genetic explanation for eye colour also crosses over into the genetics of many other eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma. This may have inspired his own interest in genetics, as he and his identical twin brother had brown eyes and their parents had blue! We now know that eye colour is actually a complex genetic trait, involving interaction of some major genes and many minor genes. ![]() Geneticist Victor McKusick stated, “The early view that blue is a simple recessive has been repeatedly shown to be wrong by observation of brown-eyed offspring of two blue-eyed parents”. There are intermediate variations of green and hazel, as well as albino eyes, which lack pigment entirely-all examples for which the simple Mendelian model does not apply. In the near future, patients will attend eye clinics with genetic results showing they are at high risk of certain eye diseases and ophthalmologists will need to know how to screen, follow and treat these patients.īlue or brown describes only a portion of eye colour. We need to ask every patient about their family history. Genetics should be part of the armamentarium of every practicing ophthalmologist. Genetics is relevant, not just for Inherited Retinal Diseases and congenital abnormalities but also for the leading causes of blindness: age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, myopia, diabetic retinopathy and cataract. As the explosion of data from genomics, big data and artificial intelligence transforms medicine, ophthalmologists need to be genetically literate. These themes in popular culture can be leveraged as tools to teach and engage everyone in genetics, which is now a key component in all eye diseases. Television shows such as Game of Thrones focused attention on the eye colour of characters, as well as their Dire-wolves and Dragons. Beyond genetics, colour perception touches on concepts involving optics, physics, physiology and psychology and can capture the imagination of the population, as we saw with social media trend of “#the dress”. Eye colour and colour perception are excellent examples to use when teaching genetics as they encompass not simply the basic Mendelian genetics of dominant, recessive and X-linked disorders, but also many of the new concepts such as non-allelic diseases, polygenic disease, phenocopies, genome-wide association study (GWAS), founder effects, gene-environment interaction, evolutionary drivers for variations, copy number variation, insertions deletions, methylation and gene inactivation.

Games like before your eyes1/31/2024 It captures the spirit of horror movies perfectly by playing on certain slasher horror tropes, but it still does enough to keep you guessing. Something sinister lurks among them, and as tensions run high, your choices can make or break the group. You follow the story of eight friends who get stuck in a remote mountain retreat and soon find they’re not exactly alone. ![]() Not a million miles away from playing out your own horror movie, Until Dawn presents you with choices and quick-time events that could very well mean life or death for the characters you meet. If you're after choices with weighty consequences (and tougher decisions than whether you should have pancakes or eggs and bacon), you’ll be glad to know Until Dawn takes it to the next level. As a blend of action game meets interactive TV show, Remedy Entertainment's offering is sure to appeal to you if you after a more adult, action-packed mystery that lets you decide how the story wraps up. X-men’s Shawn Ashmore and Games of Throne’s very own Littlefinger Aidan Gillen performed the roles using motion-capture to deliver incredibly realistic looking in-game characters. Quantum Break throws time-bending supernatural powers into the mix in a more action-packed way, but still puts an emphasis on narrative choices and story.Īs a cinematic adventure that’s very similar to playing out your very own sci-fi TV show, through a series of choices you can choose to follow the story of hero Jack Joyce, or his nemesis Paul Serene - who both happened to have gained extraordinary time-bending abilities. Especially when you’re in your awkward teen years. Sure, it can help reverse important decisions to see different outcomes, but being responsible for changing fate is pretty heavy. Quantum BreakĪs Max will attest, having supernatural abilities is no picnic. Gorgeously stylized with fully realised characters, Firewatch is a short atmospheric story-focused experience that’s hard to forget. It soon becomes clear that there’s so much more to Henry’s story, and as the days and months pass in-game, his story - and the story of the mountainous landscapes he traverses through - begins to unravel. The narrative is formed through a series of conversations between Henry and his supervisor Delilah over a handheld radio. From a first-person perspective you control Henry, a man who begins a new job out in the Wyoming wilderness to watch out for smoke and fires. While it’s not episodic in format, Firewatch’s exploratory mechanics and investigative storytelling will feed that same desire. ![]() The element of mystery in Life is Strange keeps you invested throughout, and just like a good TV cliffhanger, each episode leaves you wanting to know more. Aurora meaning1/31/2024 To find out more about the mysterious light displays, scientists have launched satellites specially designed to study auroras. Ions striking hydrogen and helium atoms can produce blue and purple auroras, although our eyes can rarely detect this part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Reddish and bluish light that often appears in the lower fringes of auroras is produced by ions striking atoms of nitrogen. This is an unusual aurora-the most familiar display, a green-yellow hue, occurs as ions strike oxygen at lower altitudes. If ions strike oxygen atoms high in the atmosphere, the interaction produces a red glow. Coloring an Aurora The colors of the aurora vary, depending on altitude and the kind of atoms involved. Intense magnetic storms can even disable communication satellites. They can disrupt radio and radar signals. Magnetic storms and active auroras can sometimes interfere with communications. Auroras have been visible as far south as the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Magnetic storms can lead to auroras being seen in the midlatitudes during the time around the spring and autumnal equinoxes. These regular fluctuations are known as magnetic storms. Some increased activity in the solar wind happens during every equinox. Bright, consistent auroras are most visible during the height of sunspot activity. Sunspot activity is tracked over an 11-year cycle. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections are sudden, extra bursts of energy in the solar wind. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections are associated with sunspots. Sunspots are the coldest part of the sun and appear as dark blobs on its white-hot surface. Solar weather is often measured in sunspots. The solar wind is usually fairly constant, but solar weather-the heating and cooling of different parts of the sun-can change daily. The most active auroras happen when the solar wind is the strongest. Most auroras happen about 97-1,000 kilometers (60-620 miles) above the Earth’s surface. The energy released during these collisions causes a colorful glowing halo around the poles-an aurora. In the ionosphere, the ions of the solar wind collide with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen from the Earth’s atmosphere. They lie about 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) from the geographic poles, but are slowly moving. The geomagnetic poles mark the tilted axis of the Earth’s magnetic field. These areas, in a region of the atmosphere called the ionosphere, are centered around the Earth’s geomagnetic poles. Although most of the solar wind is blocked by the magnetosphere, some of the ions become briefly trapped in ring-shaped holding areas around the planet. Most of the solar wind is blocked by the magnetosphere, and the ions, forced around the planet, continue to travel farther into the solar system. Without this magnetic field protecting the planet, the solar wind would blow away Earth’s fragile atmosphere, preventing all life. As solar wind approaches the Earth, it meets the Earth’s magnetic field. The ions, which continuously stream from the sun’s surface, are called the solar wind. The sun is a ball of superhot gases made up of electrically charged particles called ions. Auroras and the Solar Wind The activity that creates auroras begins on the sun. In the south, it is called aurora australis, or southern lights. In the north, the display is called aurora borealis, or northern lights. Auroras are visible almost every night near the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, which are about 66.5 degrees north and south of the Equator. Auroras are only visible at night, and usually only appear in lower polar reg ions. Colorful blue, red, yellow, green, and orange lights shift gently and change shape like softly blowing curtains. An aurora is a natural light display that shimmers in the sky.

Concrete genie grinder1/31/2024 ![]() This flooring system is a high-capacity concrete floor grinder that’s perfect for builders who like to get it done quickly. The Genie Concrete Floor Grinder is a multi-surface concrete floor grinder, polisher, and edger in one unit. What is the Concrete Genie Floor Grinder, Polisher, Edger? You risk having less texture and visibility on the edges, as well as a lighter or even darker look on the edges relative to the rest of the floor, not done otherwise. Moreover, it is essential to provide the same kind of concrete equipment and surface prep tooling on the edges as you would do on the main area of the floor when it comes to edging. Solid machinery such as an industrial vacuum cleaner is powerful and is built with a very high filtration capacity to achieve efficient dust extraction while preventing vacuumed dust from returning to the working environment. Instead, the concrete floor equipment connects to a dust-containment device that collects almost all of the debris. There is no need for water when dry polishing. ![]() Wet polishing generates a substantial volume of slurry, which crews must gather and try to get rid of responsibly. Cleanup is the most significant downside of this process. Water extends the life of polishing abrasives by reducing friction and acting as a lubricant. Water cools the diamond abrasives and removes grinding dust during wet polishing. Although both can have their advantages, dry polishing remains the most popular process in the industry today because it is quicker, more convenient, and environmentally safe. Professionals may use water-based and dry-based processes to finish concrete. (In this instance, grit refers to the diamond’s particle size.) The end effect is a gleaming, mirror-like appearance. You steadily advance from coarse grits to smoother grit abrasives, much as you will be sanding wood. Concrete surfaces are ground down to the perfect degree of shine and smoothness using a mechanism fitted with diamond-segmented abrasives (similar to sandpaper). Concrete grinding and polishing, especially when combined, may produce a smooth, striking finish that could even replicate polished marble! The Basics of Polishing ConcreteĬoncrete polishing is closely related to sanding wood. Various polishing compounds, also referred to as concrete chemicals can be added at the final stage to help officially seal and protect the surface which also gives the floor more luster. The concrete polishing process is essentially the final stage of the concrete grinding process, using the finest grit polishing pads, or floor polishing disks to produce a high shine finish. Email archiver pro review1/31/2024 ![]() If you want to create self-extracting archives, additional modules or plugins from the 7-Zip website must be downloaded first. Other features like batch compress and extracting by using hotkeys as well as drag and drop are part of this archiver tool. Moreover, any 7-Zip function can be accessed by using the right-click button on your mouse. Like the majority of compression tools out there, full support with Windows Explorer is provided by 7-Zip as well. I’m a 7-Zip user and in my opinion, though its interface looks quite plain and simple, it serves its intended functions well with a clear and clean look.Ī number of common file compression features like password protection, multi-volume support and integration with Outlook are included in 7-Zip program. However, there’s a Help menu which is very useful when you enter into a twilight zone. On the other hand, there isn’t any wizard to help you get started. Archives are easily created due to the excellent drag and drop functionality that is provided by 7-Zip. It isn’t particularly difficult though as long as you are a little computer savvy. In terms of design, it is similar to WinRAR and a little trial and error is required to properly understand all the functions and how they work. The interface was designed with Windows in mind. Furthermore, it is freeware (thumbs up here as compared to the WinZIP which is a shareware) and it supports the following versions of Windows: Windows 7 / Vista / XP / 2008 / 2003 / 2000 / NT / ME / 98. In addition, 7-Zip is a lightweight and reliable tool that doesn’t come bundled with other software. The installation of 7-Zip is as fast as it should be, considering the fact that the setup kit barely measures 1 MB. Let’s analyze its features in this quick article and find out what makes 7-Zip a solid file archiver. These archives will be very familiar for those working with Unix and Linux. It can extract from lots of archive formats and you can also create TAR and GZ archives with it. One of the best file compression utilities is 7-Zip. There are a lot of better tools out there with more functionality and features than WinZIP. Windows users often tend to forget that WinZIP isn’t the only compression software out there.

Womens bible study1/31/2024 ![]() They have a map, know what trail they are on, and know where they are headed. The most effective small group leaders are guides. It’s pretty hard to focus on Jesus when the leader is making the group about themselves. They tend to make group meetings all about themselves, their knowledge, and their insights. But gurus make really bad small group leaders. Many of us think leaders are gurus-perfect, all-knowing, wise ones who know the Bible inside and out and can answer any question. Take a second to answer this question: What makes small group leaders different than the people they are leading? Great small group leaders are guides, not gurus. The best small group leaders are actually far from perfect, but they do share some traits in common that you can easily add to your own life. You don’t even need to be perfect in order to be a great small group leader. The truth is you don’t have to be perfect in order to be effective. Now, we know small group leaders aren’t all of those things but-for whatever reason-we are sure we have to be that kind of leader. They’re stylish, funny, brilliant, put-together, and BFFs with Jesus. Good leaders host their small group in a pristine home or know the coolest place in town to chat over coffee. ![]() How can you, a normal person, lead a small group?įor some reason, we often think Bible study leaders have to be the smartest person in the room, armed with quick, charming, and compelling answers for every question. You may be feeling overwhelmed, inadequate, and a little anxious at the thought of someone asking a question you don’t know the answer to. So, you’re about to lead a small group, maybe for the first time, and you’re sure your pastor made a mistake in asking you to lead this group. RightNow Media: What is one thing you want viewers to walk away with after watching this series? So, it honestly gave me a lot of confidence that God is working these things in me and that I will continue as long as I’m here. And I think that was the big thing that stood out, that Jesus doesn’t show up looking for this kind of person, like “let me find the man of peace” or “let me find the meek.” But, rather, he’s saying, “my people that I’m going to work in, that the Holy Spirit’s going to-this is the kind of person they’re going to become.” So, it’s not eight different people, right, but eight characteristics of the same person. So, the thing that was in plain sight that really ministered to me as I prepared was that the Beatitudes aren’t a list of things that I need to work on, but rather the kind of person that Jesus is turning me into. I don’t know that I’ve ever explicitly taught through them but certainly understood them to be Jesus unpacking what the kingdom of God would look like. I mean, I’ve been a Christian for thirty years. Matt: Going into the series, I was familiar with the Beatitudes.

Godzilla save the earth ps2 unlockables1/31/2024 ![]() This is a fantastic bonus for hardcore Godzilla fans, as this will be one of the few ways to learn more about the upcoming movie. As you play the game, story details and movie stills are unlocked. Last, but not least, are the bonuses for Godzilla's 50th anniversary. Xbox owners can take the action online through Xbox Live, while PlayStation 2 players can battle it out on the Internet though GameSpy. With the improved variety in monster abilities, multiplayer games are more interesting and more fun as the ones in the previous game. There are one-on-one, two-on-two, three-on-one, and four-player free-for-all matches for you and your friends to engage in. Up to four players can battle it out with the games 18 monsters in a variety of modes. Where the game really shines is in its multiplayer modes. Though I haven't seen it, I'm sure there are few things funnier than watching Mothra bust a 7/10 split. Other games include variations of basketball and bowling. These were simple levels reminiscent of early Star Fox games your goal is to traverse the level, avoid obstacles, and shoot objects as you make your way to the end. The ones I saw included railed shooter segments featuring MOGUERA and Godzilla, respectively. Pipeworks is including several mini-games to change the pace. ![]() Monsters help each other get rid of space fleas, only on The Discovery Channel. ![]() The inclusion of this feature adds another layer to the already improved combat. Despite my protestations that fire is the secret, unbeatable element in rock-paper-scissors, Atari is not going to include fire in the game. What ensues is a rock-paper-scissors game that determines the winner. When two monsters unleash a projectile attacks at the same time, the beams clash. Mothra fans will be pleased to learn that the lovable larvae is playable this time around, in both her forms.Īnother twist added to the combat is the beam struggles. My favorite - at least out of the monsters I can talk about now - was Baragon, since he was the only creature that could strafe while using a projectile attack. For example, Gigan is a good choice for players that like to keep their distance with ranged attacks, while Battera is the way to go for players that enjoy getting down and dirty. The abilities are varied to make each combatant feel distinct. Each monster has a variety of punches, kicks, grapples, throws, projectile, and rage attacks. While it's not Virtua Fighter by any stretch of the imagination, the system is potentially very interesting. Save the Earth features more diverse styles and new additions that deepen the combat. While DAMM had some interesting combos, skirmishes often devolved into button-mashing affairs. The fighting system is the biggest addition to Save the Earth.

Ghost rider movie1/31/2024 ![]() Admittedly, one expects a certain level of preposterousness from a superhero story, but this film is far too silly to be taken seriously on any level. Maybe this "origin story" worked in the pages of the Ghost Rider comic book (I never was much of a fan, truth be told), but it's laughable on screen. His duty: defeat Blackheart and his three minions, save Johnny's old flame, Roxanne (Eva Mendes), from the clutches of evil, and return balance to the world.īy now, anyone reading this has probably gotten the idea that Ghost Rider isn't in the same league as Spider-Man, The X-Men, Superman, or Batman (unless we're referring to the Man of Steel in Superman IV or the Caped Crusader in Batman and Robin). But when Satan's son, Blackheart (Wes Bentley), decides to make Earth his dominion, Johnny becomes Ghost Rider - a leather clad biker with a flaming skull for a head. For decades, Mephistopheles leaves Johnny alone. Years later, Johnny is the world's top stuntman, a modern-day Evel Knievel - except he emerges alive and unscathed from even the most insane motorcycle jumps. It's a simple deal: Johnny gives up his soul and Prince of Evil cures Johnny's father of cancer. Daniel Webster he isn't.Īs a young man, Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) makes a pact with the Devil (Peter Fonda). In this case, it's that God gives second chances to those who save the human race from supernatural annihilation. Most of the time, stories about characters who sell their souls to Mephistopheles have a moral. To further muddle things, the Devil isn't really that bad, at least when compared to his son, Blackheart. This is the case with Ghost Rider, in which the unlikely scenario occurs whereby a servant of Satan becomes the apparent weapon of God. With its cheesy special effects and blasphemously imbecilic storyline, one wonders whether the celluloid version of Ghost Rider will find an audience.Ĭomic books and theology rarely mix and, when they do, it's usually not a comfortable mélange. Despite an incredibly silly premise, the comic was popular at one time, possibly because of the cool image presented by the title character. The B-list films feature characters who are not universally recognizable, typically do not command huge budgets, and are released outside of the prime summer months of May through July. For the movie adaptations, it's easy to tell the two apart. In the world of comic books, there are A-list titles and B-list titles.
